Dear Queer SIG Members: I have volunteered to plan social events for the Queer SIG during AERA in Denver in 2010. Please leave me any ideas, comments, or requests you have. A few facts about Denver and Colorado: - Colorado is 1 of about 20 states that prohibit discrimination based on both sexual orientation and transgender identity. - Weather in Denver in late April/early May is usually about 65 degrees and sunny. - Denver gets about 300 days of sunshine per year. - Denver has a thriving LGBT community with one of the largest Pride Celebrations in the nation, attracting about 250,000 annually.

I also have fond memories of Elle? L? -is it still open? I think they had line dancing nights so we could get the regional flair! It has multiple rooms with multiple themes (dancing, billiards, bar) - it would be cool to head there one night. Or some other place that has more a mixed clientele/feel.

RE: Suggested scholars so far...
By: ,
Apr 30 2009, 9:12 AM EDT
I have sent this list in to George Wimberley at AERA and have requested more information from AERA on 3 items: 1) Who decides which scholars are invited? 2) What criteria are being used to decide who will be invited? 3) Once the invitations have been extended and the participants have been confirmed, will AERA make the list of members of this Research Workshop group public along with the committee's official mission and potential outcomes? AERA could communicate this information by: sending an email to be posted to the Queer Studies SIG listserv, posting this information to the AERA website, and/or sending an email to the membership.
I will continue posting updates as information comes in. Thanks to all who sent in suggestions.

Hi people, I just came across this story on a website and I was wondering if anyone has heard of it. Apparently the Catholic board found out he married another man, and are trying to get rid of him. I don't think this is cut and dry like in the past since same-sex marriage is legal in Canada, and Ontario's Catholic schools are fully funded by the government, not private institutions. This could be a very interesting case, and is very relevant to me since I teach at an Ontario catholic school and have thought about marrying my partner.

Hi Tonya, yeah that's the correct address. As you are aware, my uneasiness began a couple of years ago when a colleague who's husband is a vice-principal in the Halton Catholic Board told me that a gay teacher at his school was being fired. I don't know the details of the case, but was told that "he was really obvious" suggesting this may have been the sole criteria for his firing. I had a wake-up call to the real danger I was in regarding my employment. I'm also very frustrated by the lack of awareness most Canadian gay and lesbian organizations have regarding this outrageous violation of human rights. Hopefully this will eventually change.

PRE-CONFERENCE CALL FOR PAPERS (Due Date for Proposals: Friday, January 23, 2009) The Institute for Sexual Minority Studies and Services (iSMSS), an interdisciplinary institute in the Faculty of Education, University of Alberta is pleased to host the inaugural CSSE Pre-Conference on Queer Issues in the Study of Education and Culture at Carleton University, Ottawa, on Friday, May 22, 2009. In this Call for Papers, we invite submissions from scholars and students across disciplines, activists, educators, artists, and others who work on or research queer issues in the study of education and culture. We encourage submissions from the wide-ranging topics presently constituting queer research and practice in education and culture from cross-cultural, historical, policy, comparative, international, and other perspectives. Hi all- it would be great to have a Queer SIG within CSSE. Are there any SIGS at the organizational level (that is at the CSSE writ large level as opposed to one of the other associations, like CAFE, or CACS)? I think it would be better if it were across the whole organization, but is there a process for that? Kris any word on the preconference?

Dear Queer Studies SIG members, we (Lance McCready and Judy Alston) are writing to you as co-chairs of the Queer Studies SIG to inform you of a situation that relates to the 2009 Annual Meeting in San Diego. The owner of the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel, Douglas Manchester, has made an individual contribution to an action group promoting passage of Proposition 8 in California that would essentially reverse the legalization of GLBT marriages in the state by amending the state Constitution to limit marriage as a union between men and women. Here is a link to an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education about the situation: http://chronicle.com/news/article/4939/citing-hotel-owners-donation-4-groups-threaten-to-boycott-law-schools-meeting?utm_source=at&utm_medium=en. Incidentally, the Global Hyatt Corporation, which manages the Manchester Grand Hyatt, has been named “2007 Best Places to Work” by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) list which lists the top companies that support equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) employees. Global Hyatt also received the 2006 PlanetOut Travel Award for “Best Hotel Collection”.

Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel Dilemma III update
By: lmccready,
Oct 14 2008, 12:38 AM EDT
Dear Queer Studies SIG Members, Just wanted to send a brief update on the conference call between myself, Judy, Felice, and Lorraine. Overall, the call went well. Felice and Lorraine agreed to put notification on AERA's website AND in the annual conference program. They will honor our request that none of the Queer Studies SIG sessions or event s be scheduled at the Hyatt. We did not discuss other actions or strategies that were suggetsed. There was some conversation about the transparency of AERA's policies related to annual conference location, hotel selection, and taking a timely stand on equity and social justice issues. During that conversation Felice and Lorraine clarified the purpose of the social justice action committee and AERA's position as a "research-focused" organization that does not represent "all educators." They appeared open to working with us to clarify certain policies and cited thier work with the Disability Studies SIG as an example of that commitment. Mara Sapon-Shevin and Eugenia have suggested using the SIG Business Meeting to have a symposium on the topic of AERA, Politics, Queer Issues, Social Justice. I've also been contacted by Leslie Bloom of Division B regarding co-sponsoring an AERA PRE-CONFERENCE SEMINAR on Educational Research and Activism for Social Justice On Thursday morning I have scheduled a conference call between Therese Quinn, Erica Meiners, Kevin Kumashiro, Mara Sapon-Shevin, and Liz Meyer to begin strategizing long term work with AERA and San Diego events. So there's a lot going on and there will be lot's of ways to get involved. As always, I will keep you updated via the listserve and wiki. Continue to use the wiki ( http://aeraqueerstudiessig.wetpaint.com/thread?t=anon ) or listserve to post comments. Peace, L

AERA submissions are in. Bravo! Consider volunteering to be a reviewer for Queer SIG proposals. Just go to the AERA website (www.aera.net), click on submission system login, login, then click on "Volunteer to be a Chair, Discussant or Reviewer." The more volunteers, the less we all have to read! Hope you having a wonderful summer. Take care, L

I think this is great to have our own space -- thanks so much Liz! I joinded Tapped In but haven't done anything with it so I don't know what the advantages/disadvantages are, but my sense is this wiki would give us more control over the content and ability to do whatever we wanted to do since we can add pages, etc. I would love to see this as a space to exchange ideas about research so we can collaborate and build on each other's research instead of operating in isolation (or maybe it's just me who feels isolated:)

Hi all- I'm teaching a new course (for me) this fall called "Intro to Sexual Diversity Studies" and am interested in getting recommendations on articles, intro texts, or films that you have found worked well with undergrads. This isn't in a teacher ed program, so the themes can be really broad. I appreciate any ideas or suggestions you have to offer.
Thanks!
