Call for Papers: Theme Issue on LGBT Issues in Teacher Education

Readers are invited to submit manuscripts for a theme issue of Issues in Teacher Education focusing on LGBT issues in Teacher Education. The editor will entertain articles that present innovative approaches to and/or models of inclusive LGBT social justice education at any stage in the continuum of teacher learning (initial preparation through induction and ongoing professional development). Suggestions for book reviews are invited – send to Anna Wilson, Guest Editor. There are several new books on this topic or related topics just published. This is an excellent opportunity to reach a wide audience.

Topics may include, but are not limited to: ·

Inclusive LGBT Social Justice Teacher Education Programs: How can teacher education programs effectively include sexual orientation and gender identity in their multicultural/diversity courses? What role, if any, does the concept of social justice play in teacher education programs? What is the responsibility of the faculty to ensure a safe climate specific to these issues in their courses? ·

Elementary Teacher Education: How can we best prepare elementary teachers to create safe classrooms for LGBT middle school students and students of LGBT parents? What are effective methods of recognizing and intervening in bullying and harassment both in and outside of class? What is the relationship between unsafe school environments and LGBT middle school students’ academic performances? What are LGBT-inclusive curricular resources for middle school students? ·

Secondary Teacher Education: How can we best prepare secondary teachers to create safe classrooms for LGBT high school students and students of LGBT parents? What are LGBT-inclusive curricular resources for high school students? Do these resources create safer school climates for both LGBT and straight students? If so, how? What are ways to include age- and subject-appropriate discussion of LGBT issues in classroom curriculum (e.g., current events, history, social sciences, and literature)? ·

Issues of Bullying and Harassment: What are effective methods to stop bias-related comments? How can you, as the teacher, use bias-related comments as “teachable moments?” What are ways to educate students about LGBT terminology, appropriate language, and the importance of practicing respect for all members of the school community? How are sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression different and what is their role in bullying and harassment? ·

Field Experience: What are programs doing to create a safe climate for LGBT student teachers? What are effective methods to create an inclusive student teacher social justice experience for LGBT students? How does one come to terms with the differences between the personal and the public identities of faculty, supervising teachers, and student teachers in a responsible manner? ·

Ongoing Professional Development: What types of ongoing professional development is important for teacher educators at all levels in the school systems specific to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression? How does one work with parents who contest curricular content incorporating LGBT issues?

Manuscripts should be six to 20 pages in length, doubled-spaced, and in APA 6th edition format. To have a manuscript considered for publication, submit electronic copy to the Guest Editor. Submissions should be emailed as two attached documents. The first attachment should be the manuscript including an abstract of no more than 120 words, with the titled appearing on page 1 without reference to the author(s) and a running title should appear in the header. The second manuscript attachment, also including an abstract of no more than 120 words, should include a cover sheet containing the title, author(s), professional affiliation(s), email address(es). As a third attachment, please provide separate voice and FAX numbers, a brief professional sketch (3-5 sentences), and a statement that the manuscript is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Please ensure that any identifying information embedded in the files submitted is removed. Authors of accepted manuscripts will be asked to submit a final version in electronic format with graphic material in camera-ready format.

THE QUEER STUDIES SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP SCHOLAR-ACTIVIST AWARDS PROGRAM aims to strengthen and broaden the links between activism and research as they relate to LGBTTIQ people in education, to the relationships between sexuality/gender and education, and to education-based approaches to challenging heterosexism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression. We are inviting applications from those who offer groundbreaking approaches to working with these linkages and addressing these topics through activist research.

In 2010, we have a new set of awards. We replaced the “Graduate Student Travel Award” by an “Article of the Year Award,” in order to better reflect the composition of our SIG and reward the hard work of current scholars at different stages in their careers.

Submissions will be evaluated for academic rigor, scientific or scholarly significance of the studyor work, and how they support and advance interdisciplinary discourse including queer theory, queerstudents and educators, curriculum and sexuality, and issues of intersectionality.

Rationale: The Queer Studies SIG wants to reward yearly the best published article on LGBT / queer studies in education over the previous two (2) calendar years. This is a way for the Queer Studies SIG to reward high quality research in LGBT / queer studies and to publicize the work of its members.
Selection / Eligibility Criteria: All submissions from Queer Studies SIG members that include a 1-page letter of intent, a recommendation letter and the nominated article will be eligible. Submissions for the Article of the Year Award will carry over for two years. No scholar can win twice.
Nomination Process: Candidates can be self-nominated or nominated by a colleague, student, or peer who is, or is not, a member of the Queer SIG.
Review / Selection Process: Selection will be done through blind peer review. The Awards Chair will distribute blind copies of the submitted documents to three reviewers. If necessary, ties will be broken by a fourth reviewer.
Form of Recognition: A plaque and a check will be awarded to the winner of the Article of the Year Award at the annual Queer Studies SIG business meeting, during the AERA conference.

Body of Work Award

Established: 2005 or earlier
Rationale: The Queer Studies SIG wants to reward yearly a renowned scholar in LGBT / queer studies for her or his contribution to the field, in terms of scholarly research and activism work for the LGBT / queer community. This is a way for the Queer Studies SIG to reward high-quality work and service to the LGBT / queer community.
Selection / Eligibility Criteria: All submissions from SIG members that include a resume that highlights their queer-studies related work, 1-page letter of intent, recommendation letter, and writing sample in the form of a book chapter or journal article will be eligible. Submissions for the Body of Work Award will carry over for two years. No scholar can win twice.
Nomination Process: Candidates can be self-nominated or nominated by a colleague, student, or peer who is, or is not, a member of the SIG.
Review / Selection Process: Selection will be done through peer review. The Awards Chair will distribute copies of the documents to three reviewers. If necessary, ties will be broken by a fourth reviewer. Blind review will not be possible for the Body of Work Award.
Form of Recognition: A plaque and a check will be awarded to the winner of the Body of Work Award at the annual Queer Studies SIG business meeting, during the AERA conference.

Selection / Eligibility Criteria: All submissions from Queer Studies SIG members that include a letter of intent, a recommendation letter, and a précis of the dissertation (max. 5 pages, references not included) will be eligible.
Nomination Process: Candidates can be self-nominated or nominated by a colleague, student, or peer who is, or is not, a member of the Queer SIG. A letter of recommendation will be required for the Dissertation of the Year Award.
Review / Selection Process: Selection will be done through blind peer review. The Awards Chair will distribute blind copies of the submitted documents to three reviewers. If necessary, ties will be broken by a fourth reviewer.

Graduate Student Travel Award
This award is for up to $500 support the travel of a graduate student to the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association. Eligible graduate students must have a proposal accepted by AERA to present significant scholarship and activism in Queer Studies that advances knowledge in this interdisciplinary field of intellectual inquiry in Education, and challenges heterosexism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression in educational sites.

An applicant should submit a letter that explicitly describes the presentation, highlights the connections between research and activism, and names the division, section, or SIG in which the presentation has been accepted. A panel of at least three Queer Studies SIG members will review the applications and award all or some of this fund to one or more student(s). An applicant should send two versions of the letter: one with the applicant's full name, mailing address, telephone number, e-mail address, institutional affiliation, year of study, and anticipated graduation date (if applicable) and another without this information. The second version of the letter will be used for a blind review.

Dissertation Award
This award is for $250. QUEER STUDIES SIG CALL FOR PAPERS

As Program Co-Chairs, Liz Meyer and Mara Sapon-Shevin strongly urge you to submit papers for this coming year's AERA.
The deadline for proposal submission has been changed to July 15th, so PLEASE bear this in mind. Also, if you go to the AERA website or the wiki (http://aeraqueerstudiessig.wetpaint.com), you will see new, stricter standards for what must be included in a proposal. Please guide yourself accordingly!!

Because of some of the AERA changes, we will have fewer spots, so make sure what you send us is good. Also, please do also send proposals on QUEER stuff to other SIGS , special interest groups like SAGE, and Divisions. The more places issues of sexuality and gender and such are presented, the better. This doesn't mean you shouldn't send to the QUEER SIG, just that you should diversify!!!

We had great visibility (rainbow armbands and all) at the meeting in San Diego and would like to keep up our centrality to the organization and its mission. OUT AND PROUD AND CLOSELY CONNECTED TO ALL SOCIAL JUSTICE ISSUES. Finally: please volunteer to review papers for the meeting. This helps us ensure quality reviews and helpful feedback to the authors of all submissions. We look forward to seeing your proposals!

Excerpts from AERA's description of the program theme: "Understanding Complex Ecologies in a Changing World":

"The theme of AERA’s 2010 Annual Meeting—“Understanding Complex Ecologies in a Changing World”—is intended to encourage submissions that address the conceptual, methodological, and practical challenges and opportunities inherent in understanding how and what people learn across time and space. We encourage submissions that move beyond a narrow focus on individual sites or on purely cognitive or psychosocial explanations, or on singular conceptions of identity. Such an ecological focus encourages education researchers to draw on interdisciplinary constructs and theories, complex research designs, and multiple methods of data analysis.

We further encourage submissions that examine learning within and across complex social and cultural ecologies from a historical perspective and that examine policy implications for improving learning in formal and informal settings in ways that take into account the complex ecological factors that help to shape opportunities to learn. We also highly encourage submissions that address the methodological challenges of studies that address this kind of complexity.

Finally, examining learning within and across the complex ecologies of peoples’ lives inevitably requires that we address how political and economic factors create inequities in opportunities to learn. ABSTRACT

Given the reputations of these pivotal scholars introductions are hardly
necessary, nonetheless short bios of each panelist are offered in a separate
document. In conversation with the audience, this session will address the
following: How does Postcolonial Studies work at the cracks, fissures, and in
between spaces to help explain, explore, and complicate gaps in knowledge
production? What is the relationship between postcolonial theories and other
theories interested in decolonizing efforts? To shed light on our theme, we
are asking panelists to engage in a dialogue about the role of postcolonial
theory in education, specifically the role of postcolonial theory in their own
work and how it crisscrosses and complicates other theories on which their
work depends. We see the kind of politics and commitment of the work of our
panelists as a possible nexus to open up key dialogue about the theoretical
interstices within, across and through which the field of 'mainstream'
educational theorizing can be complicated and reshaped.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this collaborative session is two-fold. First,
the session aims to bring together scholars from three SIGs
to initiate a cross-SIG conversation among/about our different, but
interrelated, fields of study. A second goal is to flesh out possibilities for
shared interests and solidarity, as well as underlying tensions, in theory,
policy, and practice. The goal of the panel is an in-depth conversation about
the complexity of and relationships among our work across the three SIGS.
Panelists will address topics such as: the state of Indigenous and
Postcolonial Studies to contextualize the fields, both historically and
contemporarily; the nature of knowledge production in the fields; the quality
of education for Indigenous and Postcolonial peoples, particularly noting
areas in need of transformation where collaboration/solidarity among peoples
might be useful; the role of the fields, particularly SIGs and AERA, in
producing theory/policy and influencing educational practices that are
transformative and anti-oppressive; and in keeping with the AERA theme, the
panelists uses of (and/or resistances to) discipline-based inquiry in the
production of knowledge.

The Queer Studies Special Interest Group (SIG) of the American Educational Research Association was formed for the specific purpose of encouraging empirical, interpretive, and critical educational research in education that considers an interdisciplinary discourse including queer theory, queer students and educators, curriculum and sexuality, issues of intersectionality, and other vital issues. In addition, the Queer Studies SIG intends to network individuals and organizations conducting or supporting such research.

The SIG sponsors a number of sessions at the AERA annual meeting, a business meeting to elect society officers and to discuss policy issues which have arisen over the previous year, as well as hosting a variety of social events for participants. The SIG supports scholarly work though research awards and endeavors to recognize and support community-based educational initiatives which promote equality for LGBTQ persons in education.

Panel discussion: "Standing our Queer Ground"

Mara Sapon-Shevin introduced the panel and prompted them to respond briefly to a few key questions, then opened it up to a larger discussion. The questions centered around the Manchester Hyatt boycott and the efforts of social justice organizers and members of the Queer SIG to get AERA to pull out of the Hyatt and take a stronger stance on issues regarding social justice & discrimination against glbtq people. She asked the panelists to consider: whose issue is this? And can we, as researchers, or research in general, be apolitical? This is in response to AERA’s claim to not take political stances on issues since we are a research organization. Mara also asked that we focus on action steps before the conclusion of the meeting.

Kevin Kumashiro – role of a professional association; we should take positions that push the “majority” and resist the tendency to assimilate differences under the banner of being “scientific”

Christine Sleeter – AERA and $$ - where is it going? How do our conference dollars impact a community and how can we find more socially just ways to spend our $$ and have AERA allocate $$? Great topic for a study – what are the economic impacts of AERA on a community and how can we work to ensure our $$ supports groups, organizations, and companies that support AERA’s stated mission and value for social justice?

Erica Meiners – we need to push the association: what does social justice MEAN to AERA? They need to put up or shut up. Attending SJAC meeting and getting “stonewalled”

Therese Quinn – Accountabililty – who are we accountable to? Where does AERA choose to hold conferences (re: Sandy Grande and comment about not going South of the Border); work more and sooner to build alliances with local groups such as teachers’ unions and local activist associations

Bill Ayers – there is a privilege in choosing to be apolitical that goes unexamined. There is a difference between being “interested in” a research question and “engaged with” a real-life problem.

Discussion addressed issues such as:
• LGBT Presidential session and the problem of more research that “measures” without presenting solutions or partnerships with folks doing the work.
• Why should we care what AERA does? This is just one week out of the year, and AERA doesn’t actually mean that much to me.
• AERA has a history of issuing policy statements based on the research – why the silence now?
• We’ve been told that there are “multiple access points” to express our concerns and try to make change – does anyone know what they are? How to get a response?
• Tensions of navigating the Manchester Hyatt dilemma – when session is there: by boycotting session (when you are the discussant) you leave grad students you have made a commitment to hanging – which allegiances are more important? How do you choose?
• Recalling the insider/outsider issue and the work to get qualitative research recognized and valued at AERA in the 70’s. (work of Yvonna Lincoln, for example)
• The bureaucracy of the organization can outlast you – we need a long term strategy
• Policies and Procedures has open meetings – this is one place to access the power structure and demand change

Action steps:

1) We formed a delegation to attend the open business meeting Friday at 8:15am to voice our concerns over AERA’s response to queer issues. Members of the Queer Studies SIG at this meeting included: Judy Alston, Bill Ayers, Therese Quinn, Erica Meiners, Jake ?, Janna Jackson, Liz Meyer. The delegation identified key “asks” and learned a few things:
a. Requested more transparency in the actions/decisions of AERA leadership - specifically re: creating an LGBT research working group
b. Concerns re: representation and process of this working group – the name indicates a disconnect from the work of the Queer Studies SIG. We wanted to know who was invited, who chose these people, and what is the goal? There is anxiety and concern amongst our membership about how the final report will be worded/presented and what actions will follow. (They responded that they are open to suggestions of scholars to invite; their hope is that this report will act like a similar report from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research council of the early 90’s that made more funds available for research on GLBT issues. They responded that the report – like all publications – will be sent out for peer review to scholars in the field before being finalized and published). – Liz Meyer is going to send out request to listserv and compile responses to send in 2 weeks. - send suggestions to Liz by April 30
c. Concerns about scheduling of Queer SIG sessions – only 10- slots and several of them competed directly against each other, including the presidential session. (They apologized for this and said they tried to be conscious of this when making the schedule and will work harder on this in the future.)
d. Request to get a standing committee for Queer Issues – we were told to work with SAGE or SJAC, that at this point there is no plan to consider creating such a standing committee.
e. We were informed that SAGE (Scholars and Advocates for Gender Equity) is revising their mission to include queer issues (we made initial contact with their committee to start a dialogue and for them to send us a draft so members of the Queer Studies SIG can review the language.) – Liz Meyer is going to follow up
f. We were advised to work with the SJAC (Social Justice Action Committee) – which we learned is “above” SAGE, the Affirmative Action Committee and the Committee for Scholars of Color and acts to synthesize and unify responses around related Social Justice Issues. Since members of these committees are Presidential appointees, we must work to get Queer Studies SIG representation (official or unofficial) at these levels of AERA. (We went and spoke to outgoing SJAC chair, Kris Gutierrez to get her insight and suggestions of how to get our voices heard and get more consistent representation at these levels of the organization. She listened to us and told us to work with SAGE and the incoming chair of SJAC to continue advocating for our position.) – Erica Meiners is going to follow up
2) Three members of this delegation then went to personally voice our concerns and intended future actions to the Management of the Manchester Hyatt. We spoke directly to a manager who wanted to set up a meeting for us with a communications person (the labor organizers had already told us about this staff member and the pat responses that he would likely provide us), but none of us were available to stay for a meeting. We simply wanted them to hear our position in person and we promised to send them a copy of a letter that we will send to AERA expressing our position and how AERA should respond and plan accordingly in the future. – Erica Meiners is going to follow up

AERA 2009 Schedule of Sessions

Dear Queer SIG members and friends,

This is a long overdue update on some important issues regarding the upcoming annual meeting of AERA in San Diego. I, Mara Sapon-Shevin, and Judy Alson met on February 20th to begin making plans for the annual meeting. We made several decisions that I am sending out to our SIG and disseminated to all other SIGS and Divisions. (We're not quite sure how to make that part happen!!). In subsequent discussions with Kevin Kumashiro, we reinforced these decisions and made a few more, so here they are:

1. If individuals are concerned about where their session is scheduled, they should write individually to AERA and register their concern, protest, request for change.

2. Our Business Meeting at AERA, which is scheduled for Thursday evening from 6:15 - 7:45 will include the business part (report, election of officers, etc.) and then will devote 45 minutes to a TOWN MEETING format on the topic (title not yet firm!): The Troubling Relationship Between Education & Politics in AERA: CAN RESEARCH BE APOLITICAL? CAN AERA STAY OUT OF THE FRAY?

Kevin Kumashiro and Bill Ayers have already greed to be two of the folks to get the conversation off the ground, and Mara is asking Christine Sleeter and Erica Meiners to be the other two. Mara will facilitate. This will NOT be a lecture, but an interactive dialogue. Lively, we hope. A flyer will be prepared and disseminated widely (EVERYONE CAN HELP!!) that advertises the session and the topic and the speakers and some key questions like:
Can educational researchers not be political?
What happens when our agendas collide?
Whose "issue" is this (the Manchester Hyatt debacle)? How do we see ourselves as affected/removed from social injustices? How do we form allies across different struggles? What is the responsibilty of members of THIS SIG for engaging in other social justice struggles.

3. The visibility campaign will be evidenced by rainbow armbands. Mara is going to make hundreds of them, but we will ask others to spread the word at their own institutions and encourage folks to bring/make their own. Mara is hoping to mail these out to Anna Wilson or Suzi SooHoo in California to bring to the meeting since she thinks they are driving.

4. We still need someone to coordinate a social event. Last year Ann Ellersbee and Renee volunteered. Could one of you step forward to lead this activity? Is anyone else interested in coordinating a social event in San Diego!

Visit the historic LGBT Center & Talk with journalist Kai Wright about his new book Drifting Toward Love: Black, Brown, Gay and Coming of Age on the Streets of New York
Countless migratory kids populate the outskirts of New York’s gay wonderland. These young people--mostly black and Latino, often homeless--are what social service providers call “at-risk” youth. They top the list for a disturbing array of social ills, from violence to suicide to HIV. But the question must be asked, what drives all this risk? Drifting Toward Love explores the question by taking a step back from it to follow a handful of young men on their search for belonging. Kai will talk about what educators can do to intervene in these young men's lives.

Canadian Queer Scholars

Greetings! This page is a test site to see if there is interest in building a community of Canadian scholars working on queer studies in education.

Following this year's Canadian Society for the Study of Education conference at UBC in June, a group of us sat down at dinner and bounced around some ideas for building a stronger presence at congress next year. Some ideas that came up were:

-Should we organize a queer studies group within CSSE? If so, at what level?
-Should we organize a pre or post conference event to help scholars connect and share their work?
-How can we better connect and support this work across Canada?

Research on Schools, Neighborhoods, and Communities: Toward Civic Responsibility

New York City is considered by many to symbolize the gateway of opportunity in the United States. The history of immigrant families and communities in this metropolitan region is well documented and an important part of the American Dream. Yet the geography of opportunity has become a local, national, and global challenge. Cities and metropolitan regions are experiencing intensified city/suburban fiscal disparities. The trend toward increased class- and race-based geospatial polarization has implications for schools, neighborhoods, and related social institutions and groups. The resulting local, state, and federal government responses often create new problems. There has been an expansion of the policing functions of government, for example, while the demand for many key social services continues to grow (e.g., housing, schools, health, and transportation). Thus local, state, and federal funding remains an important policy consideration and research opportunity.

Funding is only one of the many challenges facing communities within and across social and spatial boundaries. Many scholars have found that metropolitan education does not share the level of civic capacity that is available for other local ventures (e.g., sport stadiums). The term “civic” refers to actions and strategic plans conceived to support the goal of advancing the well-being of the entire community. Some scholars have argued that “civic capacity” captures the extent to which multiple sectors of a region have constructed formal and informal structures to create common objectives and advance common goals (e.g., the Civic Capacity and Urban Education project). Civic capacity requires communities to move beyond immediate relationships and specific occupational roles toward the acceptance of their interdependence and civic responsibility. Civic responsibility in education requires that multiple sectors of the community—individuals, governments, and nongovernment organizations—accept the charge of creating high-quality educational opportunities irrespective of neighborhood or other geospatial considerations.

This year’s Annual Meeting theme provides an intellectual space for scholarship focused on schools, neighborhoods, and communities. Examples of relevant research topics include, but are not limited to (1) higher education and community development, (2) education and social service partnerships, (3) community-based teacher education, (4) project-based learning in metropolitan settings, (5) juvenile justice and opportunity to learn, (6) fiscal policy and planning, and (7) educational role of the professions (e.g., health, law, and engineering).

While in New York City, the AERA community will have an opportunity to explore research, historical writings, and moral arguments. An overarching purpose is to define, frame, contextualize, explain, and debate solutions to the ongoing challenge of linking research on schools, neighborhoods, and communities to matters of civic responsibility and capacity-building opportunities.
